“I am terribly sorry, gentlemen, but my brother and I must be on our way,” I said, realizing there was nothing at all I could say that would now be accepted by the men sitting at the table. No excuse would be believed. It was best to take our leave and be done with it.

“Of course,” Mr. Green said, laying his cards down.

“Don’t let us keep you,” Mr. Matthews said, doing the same.

Felix gathered his cards, and even before he had them tucked neatly inside the tin, I had grabbed him by the arm and dragged him away from the table.

It was not until we were out in the hall that he rounded on me.

“Lillian, what were you – ”

I held up my hands in defense. “Yes, yes, I know,” I snapped. “Do not have a go at me here. Do you really think we need more attention?”

“I am not the one who decided to launch into a full interrogation of Mr. McDonough in front of everyone,” Felix said. “I had things entirely under control. I was going to loosen them up a bit, start asking subtle questions about Mr. Nelson, get a feel for – ”

“The person who threw Mr. Nelson over the side had a build similar to Mr. McDonough,” I interrupted.

Felix’s eyes narrowed. “You said last night that it looked like Eugene Osbourn.”

“I – I think it could have been either,” I said. “It was so dark, and from the side, it really could have been either.”

Felix rubbed his face, turning away from me.

“I don’t understand why you are upset with me,” I said. “I am just trying to get to the bottom of it all.”

“You cannot just go in and start firing off questions!” Felix snapped. “You might as well openly accuse everyone we meet. More than that, you didn’t even give me the chance to try my approach first.”

“Is that why you’re angry?” I asked, planting my hands on my hips. “I jumped in too quickly?”

“You jumped in immediately,” Felix said. “If you did not realize, Mr. McDonough was having a good time. He was speaking freely about Nelson. That is what we wanted. Now, we will be lucky if he and his wife ever speak to us again.”

“Oh, what do we care?” I asked, glowering at him. “We will probably never see them again.”

“I realize you are all too happy to burn every bridge you have ever crossed, but I am not as thrilled to be doing so,” Felix said.

I rolled my eyes. “How am I going to find information without looking for it?”

“By not charging after it like a bull seeing red,” Felix said. Then he muttered under his breath.

Fury swelled within me. “What did you say about Thomas Williams?” I asked, my fingernails digging into the palms of my hand.

Felix looked uncomfortable. “Only that I am getting the brunt of your outbursts now that Thomas has left – ”

“Maybe I left him, did you ever think of that?” I cried, prodding him in the chest.
